DTC BOTSWANA EYES JEWELLERY MAKING
Diamond Trading Company (DTC) Botswana is currently exploiting the diamond value chain with a focus on new sorting and valuation skills, diamond cutting and polishing, jewellery design and making.
When speaking at The Future of Mining Summit 2024 on the 13th June 2024 in Gaborone, DTC Botswana Managing Director, Mr. Sedireng “Sed” Serumola, said in the natural diamond pipeline, value increases along the diamond value chain, with the greatest value add in retail sales and jewellery manufacturing.
The current global market size annual revenue of diamond jewellery manufacturing and retail stands at USD 81 billion with only about 100 000 players, it is DTC Botswana’s mandate to tap into this market. As a stepping stone into the market, DTC Botswana sponsored two young Batswana jewellers to attend the JCK show in Las Vegas to have a feel of the industry. President Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi also graced this year’s JCK.
Serumola highlighted that “practically, DTC Botswana can sort up to 30 million carats per year. Due to prevailing market conditions, we sort about 23 to 24 million.”
In the same vein, DTC Botswana is using technology to revolutionalise sorting to enable data-driven decisions, and enhance operational efficiency.
Another exciting application of technology is the scanning of large categories of diamonds into blockchain technology through Tracr™️ . There also exists an opportunity to create new types of jobs.
This he said will be achieved through DTC Botswana’s Strategy 2026, which will also increase shareholder returns.
